The gut, including the esophagus, stomach and both intestines, yields clues to digestive health but also plays a role in other medical conditions and supplies important information to the brain, experts say. The gut has a distinct nervous system, and researchers are studying whether its neurons, which can be collected during a colonoscopy, can be used to diagnose neurological diseases without requiring invasive biopsies.
